Fitting It All in a Box

Packing up and leaving one residence is an exhausting, exciting, terrible experience! It is amazing how much stuff two people can accumulate in the first two years of marriage...especially when one of them is an artist that likes to make large, sculptural work.

We decided to pack all of our stuff in a PODS moving unit instead of renting a truck or hiring movers. We also shipped Nicholas' truck using an auto transport company. Our PODS measures 8x8x16. We opted to leave a few large items in RI...like our couch (which was a whopping 3 feet wide and 7 feet long), some chairs, a couple bookcases, our grill, a TV, and our TV stand. Even without those bulky items, we still needed to strategically pack our 400 boxes--half of which are books, the other half are marked glass and/or FRAGILE. Then there is the matter of getting all of our stuff down the stairs and in the PODS. Fortunately we had help from some amazing friends! In addition to packing, moving boxes, and cleaning the apartment, we also had to "at least" prime all the walls I had painted. This included: 2 bathrooms, the office, and the living room. Did I mention that Nicholas also had a 5x10 storage unit filled with stuff from his RISD studio including: 2 3x5 (heavy) sheets of crated glass, many boxes of "fragile" glass, power tools, wood, a very heavy sewing machine, and various other raw materials. The good news is that fit everything that was going to Texas in the PODS or my car. :)
