Christmas felt a little different this year. The past few years, we have spent Christmas in Texas for about 2 weeks. Those two weeks were split up pretty evenly between time in Austin and time in Dallas, and they were jam packed full of activities and seeing everyone we could. Now that we live in Austin, we didn't have to "jam-pack" all our time with different people. Nicholas worked until the day before Christmas Eve, which felt pretty weird. Then we drove to Dallas to celebrate Christmas. We didn't celebrate Christmas with Nicholas' family until after Christmas, which was also weird. We sort of lost track of days and probably a little sanity as our "base camp" began to look like a tornado hit it with packing/unpacking/new presents. Before we new it, it was New Year's Eve. I had to remind Nicholas several times, right up to 5pm that it was New Year's Eve. We had made no plans. We had no dinner reservations, and were pretty tired of eating out anyway.
So, I made dinner, and we watched a movie--The Rocker. It's cute...rent it. It seems the Turman's were just as crazed as we were. Beth finally returned my calls at 7:30pm and invited us over. So we rang in the new year with Austin family. They had dinner at 11. Before I knew it, it was 2:30am! We were just having too much fun playing Spades. Nicholas and I ended up spending the night there and then all of the next day.
On New Year's Day, I helped Beth make Hoppin' John and Connie's Cabbage (which is really just cheese dip with cabbage added) so we could get our good luck black-eyed peas and cabbage eaten. LJ made pancakes for breakfast (or lunch if you consider the time of day we ate them), and then we all listened to him practice the french horn on and off all day. We played ping pong, RockBand on Wii, Abalone (a new game to everyone), Settlers of Catan, watched football, and relaxed. It was nice to be able to spend relaxing time with friends...something we would not have experienced here in Texas in our previous whirlwind vacations.
